Merino sheep are a breed primarily raised for their high-quality wool, though they are also valued for meat production. Originally developed in Spain, the Merino is renowned worldwide for its fine, soft wool.

Modern Merino sheep were further domesticated and selectively bred in Australia and New Zealand, which are now leading producers of Merino wool. Historically, sheep are believed to have been introduced to North Africa by the Phoenicians from Asia Minor. The foundation stock of the Merino breed may have been brought to Spain by the Marinids, a Berber tribe, as late as the 12th century.

Although there are reports of sheep resembling the Merino breed in the Iberian Peninsula prior to the arrival of the Marinids, some historians suggest they may have originated from the Merinos—tax collectors of the Kingdom of León—who collected tithes in the form of wool, dried meat, and cheese.

During the 13th and 14th centuries, Spanish breeders introduced English sheep breeds and crossbred them with local sheep, contributing to the development of the Merino. This influence was openly recorded by contemporary Spanish writers.

At the time, most Merino flocks were owned by the nobility or the Church. These flocks followed a seasonal grazing pattern—spending winters on the southern plains of Spain and summers in the northern highlands.

The Merino sheep later became the foundation for many well-known modern sheep breeds. Today, Merinos are found in numerous countries and are raised across the globe for their exceptional wool.
