Bonsmara – The Balanced, Adaptable Red Breed
The Bonsmara is a medium-framed, red-colored breed originally developed in South Africa. Calves are born with horns, but to meet breed standards, dehorning is required. Known for their adaptability and efficiency, Bonsmaras thrive in various environments and consistently produce high-quality beef.
Performance & Weight
- Mature cows typically weigh between 500–550 kg, with calves weaning at an average of 230 kg.
- Bulls can weigh up to 800 kg, although weights can vary depending on veld conditions.
  - Farmers on sour veld often prefer slightly smaller animals.
  - On sweet veld, larger-framed cattle tend to perform better.
Maternal Qualities & Disease Resistance
Thanks to their Afrikaner heritage, Bonsmara cows are exceptional mothers and show a natural resistance to many tick-borne diseases that affect more European breeds. However, maintaining a comprehensive parasite control program is still essential for herd health.
Temperament
