100% Pure Breed Merino Sheep

Dorper sheep are a hardy and fast-growing breed developed in South Africa during the 1930s, originally through the crossbreeding of Dorset Horn rams and Blackhead Persian ewes. The goal was to create a meat-producing sheep that could thrive in arid and semi-arid environments while producing high-quality carcasses.

Known for their resilience, Dorpers are highly adaptable to various climates and grazing conditions, making them a popular choice for farmers worldwide. They require minimal shearing due to their unique hair and wool coat, which naturally sheds—an advantage in warmer regions.

Dorper sheep are primarily raised for meat production. They exhibit excellent feed conversion efficiency, high fertility rates, and rapid weight gain, with lambs reaching market weight faster than many traditional breeds. Their meat is lean, tender, and mild-flavored, contributing to increasing demand.

There are two main types:

Blackhead Dorper – features a distinctive black head with a white body
White Dorper – all white and preferred in some markets for their uniform appearance

In summary, Dorper sheep are a low-maintenance, high-yield breed ideal for meat production, especially in challenging environments. Their strong genetic traits, ease of care, and profitability continue to make them a valuable asset in both commercial and small-scale farming.
